Flavour description: A fruity and chocolatey aroma. The coffee is creamy with a medium body. Colour to describe flavour: Red Category: Comfortable Price transparency: The FOB price paid for this coffee is $4.80/Ib We visited Carmelita for the first time in 2015, and have been buying coffee from her ever since. Her hard work and dedication to the farm impresses us as much today as it did then. Carmelita is easily one of the strongest people we've ever met in this business. She originally had less than a hectare with a very small yield. Then after being hit with Roja (leaf rust), she joined the sustainability project “Sol de la Mañana”, which is run by our exporter Pedro Rodriguez. With their help, Carmelita successfully turned things around, and in 2019 Sol de la Mañana even won the SCA Award for Most Sustainable Business Model. When we first met Carmelita she had just prepared her land for a second hectare and was ready to start planting her new Caturra and Catuaí seedlings from her nursery. This time she wanted to do everything right from the beginning and, with the help of the agronomists in Sol de la Mañana, she did. We've since watched her farm grow to three hectares, with a lush and abundant production, and today we proudly boast European exclusivity on all of the coffees produced there. Unlike anyone else we've met in Bolivia, Carmelita is known to clean each cherry after picking and before putting it into her bags and delivering it for processing at the Rodriguez mill. She believes that joining the project has helped her to better understand what she needs to do to consistently produce better coffee and keep her crops healthy and strong. By producing a better quality coffee she is also able to earn more money and have a better future for herself and her children. To learn more about Carmelita, click here. Flavour profile: A complex and adventurous cup with crisp notes of green apple and black tea. A medium-weight body with an orange-like acidity and a tart finish of cacao nibs. Colour to describe flavour: Orange Category: Adventurous Price Transparency: FOB price paid for this coffee is $22.00 USD/lb. This coffee from Doña Daisy is an exceptional lot—rare, elegant, and lovingly crafted. The Gesha varietal is famously delicate and difficult to grow, which, combined with high market demand, makes it one of the most prized and costly coffees in the world. What makes this particular Gesha even more special is the story behind it: Daisy and her husband, Jose “Pepe” Fallas, began growing coffee not as lifelong farmers, but as retirees inspired by online research and curiosity about Gesha. After years of research and tracking down DNA-certified seeds to plant in their large garden in Costa Rica’s Central Valley, they’ve built a small but meticulous family operation. Everyone pitches in—from the couple themselves to their young grandchildren—and every bean is hand-sorted at their dining table, often across multiple rounds. Their home and farm sit at 1,650–1,700 meters, with ideal sunlight and nutrient-rich soil, previously home to livestock. This microclimate, paired with an artisanal process—including a 25–32 day Red Honey drying method—yields coffee with exceptional clarity, fruitiness and depth. The Doña Daisy Gesha, which we first discovered on a sourcing trip in 2017, continues to stand out as a beautifully personal and high-quality expression of what small-scale, passion-driven coffee farming can achieve. Flavour description: A bright aroma of dried apricot and bergamot. The cup is complex yet light-bodied, with flavour notes of candied lemon peel, apricot, and a hint of clementine. It finishes dry, reminiscent of Assam tea. Colour: Mild yellow Category: Curious Producers: Hunkute. The cooperative has 2149 members. Washing station: Hunkute Site 2 Union: Sidama Union Years of relationship: 14 years, since 2011 Price transparency: The FOB price paid for this coffee was US$4.60 /lb Hunkute is an extremely special coffee to us at Drop Coffee. We’ve been buying and roasting Hunkute for over 13 years, so it plays a huge role in our portfolio as well as our history. Hunkute is located in the Dalle region in Sidamo and is made up of two washing stations (site 1 & site 2) where the coffee is processed and belongs to the Hunkute Sidama Cooperative, which is made up of 2149 members, most of whom are small-scale farmers from the surrounding area. This harvest is from Hunkute Site 2, which is located at 2150 masl. In Ethiopia there are over 1.1 million smallholder coffee farmers, delivering cherries to local washing stations. Many people people dry, roast, and brew their own coffees themselves. As a country, Ethiopia consumes over 40% of what they produce (compared to Kenya where they keep less than 5% of all the coffee produced in the country). Since Sidamo is such a coffee mecca, the market is competitive for the cooperatives in the region. This is one of the reasons the Sidama Cooperative pays farmers upfront daily during harvest (November-January). All of the volumes and coffee cherry prices are displayed and they also have a second payment based on the selling price which is then paid to the farmers by August. This differs greatly from how late we've seen some farmers while visiting different cooperatives in Ethiopia. At Hunkute, about 70% of the payment goes to the farmers and the rest is for investments at the washing stations and the cooperative. Hunkute is like no other coffee we’ve ever come across, with an aroma of dried apricot and bergamot. The cup is complex yet light-bodied, with flavour notes of candied lemon peel, apricot, and a hint of clementine. It finishes dry, reminiscent of Assam tea. It’s no surprise many longtime Drop Coffee drinkers hold this as one of their favorites. Click here to learn more about Hunkute. Innehåller kaffe, förvaras mörkt och svalt.

Flavour profile: The coffee has an aroma of warm black currant cordial. The coffee has a great clarity with a high phosphoric acidity, with flavour notes reminiscent of black currant, melted butter and rhubarb. The mouthfeel is light and juicy with a long-lasting, bright and cooling finish. Colour: Light purple Category: Adventurous Cooperative: New Ngariama Cooperative Society Washing station: Kamwangi Factory Drying: On raised beds for 12-20 days. Covered with plastic when the sun is hottest. Price transparency: The FOB price paid for this coffee was 6.76$/lb. Kamwangi AA Washed is produced by the New Ngariama Cooperative in Kirinyaga, Kenya, and is the largest bean size of the yearly harvest (Kamwangi PB being the smallest). In Kenya, coffee processing stations, are called factories. The Kamwangi factory is one of two factories under the cooperative named New Ngariama Cooperative Society located in the fertile, volcanic hills surrounding Mount Kenya, with a third factory soon to become operational. While this area is less known than its neighbour, Nyeri, their coffee has wowed us from the beginning and this harvest marks our fourteenths year working together. The New Ngariama Cooperative Society is mainly made up of small farms, each with around 100 trees in the Gichugu division of the Kirinyaga district. Here, farmers are organized in cooperative societies that act as umbrella organisations for Kamwangi and other coffee factories. Smallholders deliver their freshly picked coffee cherries for processing every day for a period of about two months during the fall season, pften delivering 25-50 kilo by foot or bike. Then each producer will sort their cherries manually to sort out defects and lower grade beans since payment is determined by quality. The meticulous attention given in this process is one of the reasons Kamwangi's coffees have such an outstanding quality and delicious flavour profile that is so highly so after. Whenever we visit Kamwangi factory, manager Edwin Gichori is quick to speak of the work being done in order to help raise quality levels further and of where changes can be made in the long-term. Kamwangi offers small advance payments to the farmers at delivery and is often able to give back 80% of the sales price back to farmers, after the cost of milling and marketing is deducted. Kamwangi has been Rainforest Alliance for decades which helped to stricter things at the washing station, however the pricing structure is based on quality and not reliant on any certification. Flavour profile: This coffee is jucy and bright, with flavour notes of passion fruit and orange peel and a hint of clementine. The mouthfeel is remenicent of grape juice with an acidity of passion fruit in the aftertaste. Colour to describe flavour: Orange Category: Curious Price transparency: The FOB price paid for this coffee was $6/lb. This is the first year we are buying coffee from the farm La Siberia, but we have been working with Carmen and Rafael da Silva Hoff for many years, as well as visiting the tricky-to-get-to get to Sibiria farm. The Silva Hoff family is so professional to work with and are so hardworking and the friendliest people. They have full control of their farms throughout the process and export to us. Back in 1870, Fabio Morán and Epifanio Silva decided to sow coffee trees in one of the highest summits of the Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range. They named the farm La Siberia for its chaotic weather conditions, along with its difficult accessibility. One century later, Rafael Silva inherited the property. It is located between 1,450 and 1650 meters above sea level. He has worked it up to be one of the best coffee producing farms in the world. A few years later he met his wife Carmen. The couple got married in their young 30s and since then they are running the business together. Carmen is very much doing everything in the back office, logistics, and marketing. The name of their company is Sicafé. In 2010, they decided to invest in their own mill called San Pedo to ensure full control over the entire coffee process. Here, they process coffee from their own farms, separated by day, lots and varietals. They also process coffee for other producers in the area. Their two sons, Rafael Gerardo and Rodrigo and their daughter Valeria are also involved in the business. Carmen and Rafael have been winning the El Salvador Cup of Excellence for their farm La Lany in 2005, 2007, for the farm Siberia in 2010 and 2012 and for Llano Grande in 2012. And in 2017 San Cayetano won Silver in the Agenca Pour la Valoriastion des Produits Agirole. Innehåller kaffe, förvaras mörkt och svalt.

Flavour profile: A vibrant aroma of ripe raspberry. Flavor notes of crisp green grape and strawberry, with a white sugar sweetness. The finish is clean with a hint of strawberry tartness. Colour to describe flavour: Raspberry red Category: Adventurous Producers: Ernesto Menéndez Price transparency: The FOB price paid for this coffee was $8.8 /Ib. Las Brumas Natural Gesha is produced by our longtime partner and friend, Ernesto Menéndez. Located in the forest of the Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range, Las Brumas is totally different from any other coffee farm we've ever seen. The coffee trees at Las Brumas are spread out in the forest to be built up as "wild grown" as possible, without interfering with nature. Nearly 70 years ago, the previous owner of Las Brumas planted SL28 seeds on the farm, seeds which had been taken home to El Salvador from a hunting trip in Kenya. Over time they've of course adapted to the different growing conditions and terroir, but still hold their trademark cooling finish and lime notes of this Gesha varietal. We've began working with Ernesto in 2015, and have been buying the coffee from his farms Las Brumas and Los Andes ever since. It was a relationship that started purely based on geekiness in how to create a really high-end cup of coffee. Ernesto is a great producer who constantly cups and improves his methods of growing and processing, something that makes working together really fun, and he has a theory behind every decision in how this coffee was produced. Ernesto has won the Cup of Excellence several times, and the coffee from Las Brumas has also previously won the World Barista Championship. Flavour description: The coffee has an aroma of sherry. This is a sweet and a little boozy and floral cup, with flavour notes of papaya, cacao and rum raisin and a fudge-like flavour in the finish. Las Delicias Natural Java is produced by the Mierisch family and is one of the prettiest most well-balanced coffees we have had all year. Since 2016 the Las Delicias farm was run by Eleane Mierisch, but unfortunately we lost her in 2023. Eleane was very dear friend to us and one of the leading lights in coffee processing in Nicaragua and Honduras, a field traditionally dominated by men. We are so happy to have this coffee from Las Delicias, the first farm belonging to entirely to Eleane, to remind us of her pioneering spirit and warm personality. Thankfully, this Las Delicias was not a one woman show, but a team approach, as Eleane enlisted the entire Mierisch family, who consist of three generations, to help. Today Dr Erwin Mierisch, his son Erwin and his grand son Erwin Jr carry on with a focus on perfecting the Java varietal at this farm. Their skill and expertise is evident in the delicate and bright profile of their Javas (as well as numerous times they've won Nicaragua's "Cup of Excellence"), which gets more and more intense notes of citric and apricot every year. And with natural processing, as in this case, it has even more passion fruit and fudge. We love this coffee so much that we even used it as the mother plant to the Java we are buying from La Linda in Bolivia! The Mierisch family are also very active in developing numerous social and environmental projects to improve the quality of life for the hundreds of workers they employ, local community and ecosystem. If any one producer could single handedly demonstrate just how significantly coffee can positively impact society it'd have to be them. Las Delicias Natural Java has a boozy aroma of sherry. Flavour description: This coffee has very sweet notes of milk chocolate and brown sugar, meet a thick and almost sticky mouthfeel with a bright acidity of lime. A flavour of dried pineapple lingers on the finish. Color: Yellow Category: Comfortable Price Transparency: The FOB price paid for this coffee was $3.85/lb Los Altares is a farm located in the small town of Palencia, east of Guatemala City. This farm is owned by Guadalupe Alberto “Beto” Reyes, who used to be the Mayor of Palencia and since 2012 has been growing coffee in the area. His work has helped put Palencia, a region not previously known for growing coffee, on the coffee map in Guatemala and leading to significantly development. We have previously worked with a nearby farm called El Limon, and first got to visit what came to be Calahual and Los Altares long before it was bought and replanted by Alberto. Today it's grown into a family business with Beto’s wife and sons also working on the farm and running operations. Their care and devotion to each step of production has led to continued improvements on the wet-mill, which helps them separate and track different lots and harvests, and control the overall quality of production. The Reyes family have a vision of building more exclusive and tasty varietals, a journey that we are involved in, helping to figure out which varietals and processes are best suited to the microclimate of this region. The plants here have taken several years to yield a commercial harvest, so we're very excited to share this crop!

Flavour profile: A sweet and chocolatey aroma. This coffee has a medium intense sweetness of dried apricot. Flavour notes of dark chocolate and stewed apples. The body is medium and the mouthfeel is smooth. Colour: Green Category: Adventurous Producers: Ernesto Menéndez Price transparency: The FOB price paid for this coffee was $4.50/Ib. Ernesto Menéndez is a well-known name in the coffee industry and has won the coveted Cup of Excellence several times. We're honoured and proud to hold exclusivity on all the coffees he produces at Los Andes! Nestled in the Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range, Los Andes farm is about 5 hectares, which yields a bit more than we typically buy, but we find it well worth committing to all of the coffee to maintain this valuable partnership. Ernesto holds a lot of knowledge and is always very communicative about how he takes care of the farm, and how he processes his coffees. Walking the farm together with him is like opening a true treasure, he holds so much knowledge and skills from the agriculture, processing and to the cupping table. Los Andes has quite an interesting story. Almost 60-70 years ago, the previous owner of the farm planted SL28 trees on the land which had been taken home from a hunting trip in Kenya. As a result, the Bourbon varietal at Los Andes now grows right beside the SL28 trees, some of which are now almost 80 years-old. For comparison, most of our coffees come from plants that are only 3-20 years old. At Los Andes, everything is left to grow "wild" to create a more wild forest environment and the coffee is produced in harmony with the nature. This is also why Ernesto keeps the older plants around, instead of simply planting new ones. The plants age and grow into the natural forest environment that Ernesto is looking for and make the environment really special. Bourbon coffee was first produced in Reúnion, which was known as Île Bourbon before 1789. It was later taken by the French to mainland Africa and to Central America. The taste profile of this Bourbon is one that we like the most in El Salvador, its mature sweetness matches the slightly bigger mouthfeel that is typical for the country.
